Now that we've finally got the bedroom walls painted (pics coming soon, I promise!), it's time to replace our saggy, shabby ikea bedframe. I'm almost 100% certain I'd like an upholstered headboard, but with such a lovely selection of specimens out there, how will I ever decide which is best? A few things are certain. It should be clean, simple, versatile and of course comfortable.
But that's where the certainties end and the questions begin. Do I want nailheads? Tufting? Should I go light? Dark? I love the grand scale and proportion of #2, but will it take over the room? And I do enjoy the gentle curve of #3, but perhaps right angles will mesh better with the mid-century leanings of our other furnishings. Something tells me the huz and I need to make a shopping date to go test these babies in person!
Tell me: do you have a favourite?

Can't say I'd pick one of them for certain, I once saw the most beautiful leather upholstered bed, probably at Pottery Barn and that was back when I wanted a world traveler look not light and airy and white.
Being poor as church mice, we made our own - made a headboard as tall as we wanted with wood, staple and nail on or whatever the man of the house did with padding from the fabric store and then a simple thing to pick your favorite fabric to cover it. I then changed it over to white later on, then a second bedroom got the same treatment, but with different tapestry fabric. If you're handy it's the best way to go to save money and make it just the way you want it. I hope that helps somehow.
I do so rec upholstered high beds, they help you when you are sick and want to sit up in bed, mean less pillows when you do that, too. I love the look of iron beds a great deal, but I'm a converted upholstered headboard, especially after banging my head by accident a few times these past few weeks on my old bed in the living room while I recuperate. lol

I like no. 5 best. We have an upholstered headboard at Garvinweasel, but it is leaning against a wall awaiting a finished bedroom to call home.

I've been on the exact same hunt. I've had trouble with choosing beds for the longest time. A wooden frame seems so heavy and I have an obsession with BDDW that makes everything else pale.
Upholstered seems a good way to go, but I still want something fairly streamlined. And some upholstered (Restoration Hardware) seem ridiculously pricey. I've come back to this one quite often http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1011&f=26287

Speaking of testing those babies out... if you see children in your future, toss out any thought of a light fabric covered headboard. Or get something that can be slipcovered with relative ease. (Sorry to throw the practicality wrench in your plans!)

Your kitties are going to LOVE your upholstered headboard, Anne! I'd definitely go for tufted. Handy for pawholds.

My pick is no. 3 with the subtle hue and classic shape - it looks like it could go with anything! I love upholstered headboards! Good luck with your search!

I like #2. It has a grandness about it, without being too over-the-top. And you have to have nailheads, they're like jewelry for furniture! P.S. Thanks for the blog compliment! I was very excited to see someone actually commented on my blog!

You and me both! Since my Brocade Home debacle (2 cracked headboards) I have been searching for the perfect one...tufted, non-tufted? Let me know what you pick, can't wait to see.

3 and 4 are my personal favorites, but number 5 is great too. I'd pick 3 for myself and do some elaborate bedding, but I can totally see you doing something amazing with number 5. Our house remodel is nearly done and then it's going to be time to decorate! I plan to make a DIY upholstered headboard. I did a huge tufted ottoman a couple years back and it was surprisingly easy and much easier on my pocket book. Anyway- can't wait to see what you choose!

Anne, your dear kitties were the first thought I had on reading your post, given that nearly every upholstered item in our home is partially shredded. I like to think it adds character. :) But your leather idea could be very practical...

wow, I would love to get one!

I've liked #5 for a while, but I recall they had a pretty limited selection of fabric options for it, and COM wasn't an option. Just something to keep in mind.

this one may not be your style at all but it's on sale at Anthropologie and I love the simplicity of it and the fact that the frame is wood> http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?subCategoryId=&id=76409&catId=SHOPSALE-FURNITURE&pushId=SHOPSALE-FURNITURE&popId=SHOPSALE&sortProperties=&navCount=335&navAction=top&fromCategoryPage=true&selectedProductSize=&selectedProductSize1=&color=nat&colorName=NATURAL&isSubcategory=&isProduct=true&isBigImage=&templateType=E

I wish I lived closer, because a partner in crime for massive holiday baking would be so much fun. I can't wait to see what you make (and the new bedroom!)
